What is llms.txt?
An llms.txt file is a plain-text Markdown file at the root of your website that tells AI tools who you are, what you sell and which pages matter, in a format they can read in one pass.
Think of it as a briefing you hand every AI assistant before it talks about you. It was proposed in 2024 at llmstxt.org, and the companion llms-full.txt carries the complete version.

Drop both files in the folder that holds your homepage's index.html. On Next.js, Astro, Vite and most frameworks, that's the public/ folder. Commit, deploy, done.
Most hosts serve .txt as plain text automatically. If yours lets you set headers, use text/plain; charset=utf-8.

- Open your host's File Manager (cPanel, SiteGround, Bluehost, WP Engine and most others have one) or connect over SFTP.
- Find the folder that contains

Using Yoast, Rank Math or AIOSEO? Some versions generate their own llms.txt. A real file in the root usually wins, but open yoursite.com/llms.txt afterward and make sure you see yours, not the plugin's.
WebflowNative upload, no workaround needed
- Go to Site settings → SEO → LLMs.txt.
- Click Upload file, choose your llms.txt, then Save changes and publish.
Webflow requires UTF-8 and under 100 KB, which these files are. The slot only holds llms.txt, so host llms-full.txt anywhere public (Webflow's Assets panel works), paste that address into the llms-full.txt address field above, and download llms.txt again so the link inside it points to the right place.
ShopifyNo root uploads, so you use a redirect
- Open yourstore.com/llms.txt first. Shopify has started serving a default file on some stores. If one loads, skip to the note below.
- Go to Content → Files, upload both files, and copy each file's URL.
- Go to Content → Menus → View URL redirects. Redirect
/llms.txtand/llms-full.txtto those URLs. - Paste the llms-full.txt URL into the llms-full.txt address field above and re-download llms.txt.
Already see a default file? Redirects don't override pages that exist, so replacing it means theme code. That's a quick job for us.
SquarespaceCheck for the built-in option first
Newer 7.1 sites are getting a built-in llms.txt option. Look in your SEO settings first. If it's there, paste in your llms.txt and save.
No option yet? Use the file-link trick:
- Add a link in any navigation, open its settings, set the link type to File, upload llms.txt, then close without saving. The file now lives at
/s/llms.txt. - Go to Settings → Developer Tools → URL Mappings and add
/llms.txt -> /s/llms.txt 301. Repeat for llms-full.txt.
WixRolling out natively, site by site
Wix is rolling out a built-in llms.txt. Open your SEO dashboard and search for “llms”. If it's there, replace the default with yours. Heads up: once you edit it, Wix stops updating it automatically, so keeping it current is on you.

Anything elseSite builders, agencies, mystery hosting
If you can upload a file to your site's root, upload it. If you can create a 301 redirect, host the file anywhere public and redirect /llms.txt to it. If you can do neither, send it our way.

What is an llms.txt file?
A plain-text Markdown file at the root of your website (yoursite.com/llms.txt) that tells AI tools who you are, what you sell and which pages matter, in a format they can read in one pass. It was proposed by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI in 2024 (llmstxt.org), and developer docs from companies like Anthropic, Stripe and Cloudflare publish one.
What's the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?
llms.txt is the short map: a one-line summary, key facts and links to your most important pages. llms-full.txt is the whole story in one file: every service with its description and price, your FAQs, policies, proof and service area, so an AI tool can answer questions about you without crawling a single page.
Will llms.txt get my business recommended by ChatGPT or Google AI?
Not by itself. Google has said its Search systems, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, don't use llms.txt. Some AI agents and tools do read it when they fetch your site, and it costs nothing to have a clean, accurate version waiting. What actually moves AI recommendations is consistent facts across your site, Google Business Profile and directories, real reviews, schema, and pages that answer the questions buyers ask.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they're allowed to fetch. llms.txt tells AI what you are and where the good stuff is. If you want to allow or block AI crawlers like GPTBot or ClaudeBot, that still happens in robots.txt.
Where do I put llms.txt and llms-full.txt?
In the root of your site, next to robots.txt and sitemap.xml, so they load at yoursite.com/llms.txt and yoursite.com/llms-full.txt. On platforms that don't allow root uploads, like Shopify or older Squarespace sites, you host the file and add a 301 redirect from /llms.txt to it. Platform steps are above.
How often should I update my llms.txt?
Any time a fact in it changes: a new service, a price, your hours, your address, a new key page. Stale facts are worse than no facts, because AI will repeat them. A quick check every quarter is a good habit. Your snapshot stays saved in this browser, so updates take a minute.
Does this generator save or send what I type?
Nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else. The generator runs entirely in your browser, saves your progress in this browser only, and the Start Over button wipes it.
